  • The Lionfish (Pterois volitans) is an Indo Pacific predator that has unfortunately been introduced into our waters. It eats anything alive that will fit into it's cavernous mouth, and has no natural predators here to to slow it's growth. As with all Lionfish, it has venomous dorsal and anal fin spines, and it hurts quite badly when you get stung. Trust me on this one... They are easy to care for and can be trained to eat frozed silversides, shrimp etc. They can get up to 15", but typically are smaller in the aquarium. They make a great conversation piece, as no other fish really looks like them. They are typically red and white striped, although there are some variations on the red, some almost black.
